Sam Curran Shares about his views regarding the Impact player rule

From the viewpoint of a player that had only one skill in the game, cricket has not blessed such persons. Until a rule that was brought in the Indian Premier League (IPL) changed the whole scenario. Even though Sam Curran who is an all-rounder from England has been the last person to express his views regarding the ‘Impact Player’ rule in T20 format, he nevertheless has pointed out both the advantages and disadvantages of the rule.

The 27-year-old from England who is an all-rounder has been one of the outstanding players in the ILT20 this year. He is leading the run charts and has also taken vital wickets for his team, the Desert Vipers. Sam Curran in an exclusive interview with The Times of India talked about the ongoing ILT20 tournament, what his implications are and also the trade involving him, Sanju Samson, and Ravindra Jadeja for the 19th edition of the IPL.

The Desert Vipers began their season with six consecutive wins in the group stage and were the only team to do so this season. The franchise has only lost one game throughout the season and is now looking good to go beyond the group stage to the finals. Curran attributes their performance to consistency and to different players who have come forward at crucial moments.

The English all-rounder also took the opportunity to talk about playing for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in IPL 2026, and his joy about that. Curran has a very good relationship with Kumar Sangakkara, the head coach of the franchise for next season. However, he mentioned about getting constant opportunities throughout the season as opposed to last year when he did not get to play much for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Sam Curran Explores the Impact Player Rule

The ‘Impact Player’ regulation was a turning point in the shortest format, especially in the Indian Premier League. This rule has divided opinions among the players, with Neesham, the New Zealand all-rounder, openly and strongly disagreeing with the rule. Some players think that the rule takes away the essence of the format.

On the contrary, Curran shared a balanced view by calling it a tactical rule rather than anything else. Teams get the benefit to field one more player who is highly needed which has been utilized by the franchises in a great way to their own advantage. However, Curran was on the other side of the rule stating that a strong team would never feel the need to apply the rule.

“People like it, people hate it. But I guess if you’re a good team, you don’t really need an impact player”, said Sam Curran in an interview.

The “Impact Player” rule is applied differently by various teams, and thus it should be. When Curran was asked whether he would like to retain the rule or abolish it (if it were his call), he indicated that he would retain the rule and concentrate on its proper use. He stated that it was a good tactical move for a team to be able to have 12 players on the field.
