Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill were on fire for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2025. Together with Jos Buttler, they scored most of the runs during a strong season that unfortunately ended with a loss to the Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator. GT was set a tough target of 229 to clinch a spot in Qualifier 2 against the Punjab Kings, but despite Sudharsan’s impressive 80, they fell 20 runs short.
Sudharsan kept doing his thing, putting up solid scores, but Gill got out early in the first over. That early wicket cost them a chance at breaking an IPL record by just 28 runs. Before the match against MI, Sudharsan and Gill had piled up 909 runs as an opening pair and were aiming to set the record for most runs by a pair in a single IPL season. The record was held by Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis in 2023, and Kohli with AB de Villiers in 2016, both hitting 939 runs. Gill and Sudharsan needed 31 runs to top that, but ended up missing out by just 28 when Gill got out for only three runs.

Even after losing Gill early and chasing a massive target, GT managed to stay in the game and even took the lead at times. Sudharsan and Washington Sundar put together a solid 84-run partnership for the second wicket. But things changed when Jasprit Bumrah got Sundar out in the 14th over, and Richard Gleeson took down Sudharsan in the 17th over. After that, despite some efforts from Sherfane Rutherford, Rahul Tewatia, and Shahrukh Khan, GT couldn’t make it and ended up losing by 20 runs.
