Sachin Tendulkar praised openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Shubman Gill for their impressive batting on the first day of the second Test against England at Edgbaston. India reached 310/5 at the close of play.
England chose to bowl first under cloudy skies. India changed their lineup, making three adjustments from the Leeds Test to strengthen their batting. This new strategy was tested right away.
Despite a short collapse late in the day, Gill steadied the innings with an unbeaten 114. He and Ravindra Jadeja (41*) put together a 99-run partnership to guide India to the end of the day without further losses.
Jaiswal’s smooth innings set the tone earlier in the day after India lost KL Rahul early. England’s bowlers, especially Chris Woakes, found movement and bounce early, but only managed to take one wicket. Jaiswal scored 87 and participated in two important partnerships with Karun Nair and Gill.
Tendulkar wrote on X, @ybj_19 was positive, fearless, and aggressive from the start. @ShubmanGill was cool, calm under pressure, solid in defense, and in total control. Both played classy innings. Well played, boys!
Jaiswal spoke highly of his captain after play, saying, He has been amazing with his batting. It’s incredible to watch him play, and as a captain, he is clear about what he wants to do with the team. We are all confident in our plans.
We are all enjoying batting, and the goal is for the set batter to carry the game forward. We all have the same mindset.
England bowler Chris Woakes also said he was impressed with Gill’s performance.
We almost got him out lbw, but he got a slight inside edge, said Woakes. Apart from that, he seemed to be in control. Credit to him. He played very well. It’s a very good hundred and an important one for their team.
