Only a few days after his removal from India’s ODI squad for the New Zealand series, batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad has set a new record in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which is the top 50-over domestic tournament in India. As the skipper of Maharashtra, Gaikwad hit an incredible 134 off 131 balls against Goa on Thursday. This century allowed Gaikwad to tie the record for the most centuries in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, with 15. Interestingly, Gaikwad’s teammate in Maharashtra, Ankit Bawne, was the one who had the record all to himself before.
Retirement seems to be just around the corner
Coming in at No. 5, Gaikwad hit eight boundaries and six sixes during his innings of 134, which marked his second century of the current Vijay Hazare Trophy season. His batting display alone was sufficient to help Maharashtra attain a reasonable total of 249/7 in 50 overs.
Bawne, batting at No. 3, was dismissed without scoring.
Gaikwad, the captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), was surprisingly left out of India’s ODI squad for the series against New Zealand even though he had scored his first century in the format against South Africa in December 2025.
The 28-year-old has accomplished the feat in only 59 innings. However, Bawne has been an active participant and has already played over 100 matches.
Gaikwad’s and Bawne’s scores of 15 have been closely followed by the Karnataka pair of Devdutt Padikkal and Mayank Agarwal, with 13 runs each. Both the players are enjoying their batting in the current Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Padikkal, the player for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL, has hit 13 centuries in only 35 innings and is quickly catching up to Gaikwad’s newly-acquired milestone. The 25-year-old batter has already knocked off the four centuries in the present season.
The famous one-day batting legends of India such as Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Sourav Ganguly, or MS Dhoni are far from being the record holders in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
