Former Indian fast bowler RP Singh has expressed his support for Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer to be included in the Indian squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup. The tournament is scheduled to take place in India during October and November. Currently, team India is going through too many injuries and Iyer needs to work very hard to get into the team.
While having a conversation on Jio Cinema, RP Singh said that both Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer need to be there in the World Cup squad as they make this Indian-middle order very strong.
“Suryakumar Yadav is a good option for No 4, along with Shreyas (Iyer), provided he is fit. But if you are looking at him even as a backup option, it is important to give him game-time and he is certainly a good pick,” said RP Singh during an interaction organised by Jio Cinema.
Suryakumar has been exceptional for team India in T20I but he needs to prove himself in ODI cricket. The right-handed batter has scored only 452 runs from 24 matches, he remains a potential candidate for the World Cup squad. On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer who has been a consistent performer for the team is currently undergoing rehabilitation for a back injury.
“Suryakumar is yet to make his mark in one-day cricket but the way he is batting, and the kind of batter that he is, he can be a good option for No 4 or 5,” he said.
While talking on the lack of options in team India, RP Singh said that the management should have a good backup with them before going to a big tournament.
“You must always have backup options heading into major tournaments. His current form in T20 cricket has been very good, one-day format is different because you have (to face) more number of balls. Due to that, he will have to change his game-plan a bit,” he said.

The former seamer also notified that team India does not have too many options who can come and perform at number four.
“He is an experienced player, it is about that one click — how many games he takes to make one big score. Once that happens, he will not face any such issues. Anyway, how many options does the team even have for No 4?,” he said.
