It is said that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is getting ready to conduct a meeting of review that will include selectors, captain, coach Gautam Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. The main point of the conversation will be the two up-and-coming players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, and their fate, with a focus on the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Rohit and Virat’s last appearance for India was in the Australian ODI series, where India lost 1-2. The duo was back after a hiatus of about seven months, having last played together in the Champions Trophy 2025 final. Kohli had a rough patch scoring zero runs in the first two games but together with Rohit, they led the team to a victory in the last match.
The BCCI has a Future Meeting on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli
The Times of India has reported that senior BCCI officials, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar will hold talks in Ahmedabad after the third ODI next week in Visakhapatnam.
This dialogue is likely to give insight into the future roles of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, while the management is also expected to look for possible replacements. A source from BCCI said that it is important for the players to have a clear idea of the expectations regarding their performance rather than being in the situation where they have to figure it out.
“The significance of the statement is that besides having clear expectations from them, the current management should also be very much sure about their roles. It’s not that they can be just playing with uncertainty,” the BCCI source elaborated.
BCCI Requests Rohit Sharma to Prioritize Fitness Amidst Future Speculation
The report further revealed that BCCI had suggested Rohit Sharma to stay focused on fitness and performance and not to respond to the speculations regarding his future. At the forthcoming meeting with the two senior batsmen, the board intends to bring up the issues that the selectors and team management have raised.
Rohit and Virat Kohli may have a difficult time keeping their fitness level high since they only play one format. Although both batters played well in the last ODI against Australia, it was already confirmed by the officials that the series was not theirs.
“They scored runs in the third ODI in Australia. But the series was already lost and the match was set up by the bowlers in the first innings. They looked rusty in the first two matches. One can’t afford that in every series,” a source mentioned.
Expecting Aggressive Batting Style from Rohit Sharma
Team management thinks that Rohit Sharma has to keep his aggressive style because he was more cautious and took a longer time to settle in Australia. Also, Rohit and Virat are expected to elevate the batting unit right from the top and help the junior players around them feel more composed.
“It is supposed he keeps on taking the lead as a fearless batter at the top. The situation was tough in Australia, but it might have looked that he was not ready to take risks. Both are forecasted to lead the battings, which would be easier for the new younger batters that surround them,” said sources.
The board hopes that Virat and Rohit will play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy next month. After the season, India will have a home ODI series against New Zealand in January, followed by their next significant 50-over task, a three-match tour of England in July.
