Last week, batting star Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket. He’s been one of the top players of his time, scoring 4,301 runs in 68 Tests with an average of 40.57. Rohit hit 12 centuries, all contributing to Indian wins, along with 18 fifties.
Just days after his retirement announcement on social media, he met with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at his home. The CM shared some photos of their meeting on social media and wished Rohit the best for his future after his Test career.
Rohit’s journey could’ve looked quite different if he hadn’t injured his ankle right before what was supposed to be his Test debut in February 2010. He had to wait three more years before finally making the Test team, and he made a statement with a brilliant 177 on his debut in Kolkata.
For about six years, he played in the middle order and had some ups and downs with his performance, but he showed flashes of his talent. In October 2019, Rohit was moved to open the batting, which changed his Test career for the better. In his first series as an opener, he scored one double century and two centuries in three matches against South Africa at home.
In his recent Instagram post, Rohit confirmed he’s stepping away from Test cricket but will still play ODIs. He had already announced his retirement from T20Is last year after leading India to a world cup win. He wrote, “Hello everyone, I’d like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an honor to represent my country. Thank you for all the support over the years. I will keep playing for India in ODIs.”
