Rohit Sharma bids adieu to test cricket

Rohit Sharma has announced he’s retiring from Test cricket right away. He shared the news on his Instagram story on Wednesday, saying he’ll keep playing in ODIs though. He had already stepped back from T20Is after the 2024 T20 World Cup. This decision clears up any doubts about his future in Tests, especially after a rough performance in the 2024-25 Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.

In his Instagram post, he said, “Hello everyone, I just want to let you know that I’m retiring from Test cricket. It’s been a true honor to represent my country in whites. Thanks for all the love and support over the years. I’ll keep playing for India in ODIs.”

At 38, Rohit was India’s top Test batter later in his career, scoring 4,301 runs in 67 Tests with 12 centuries and 18 fifties at an average of 40.57. He also led India to the World Test Championship final against Australia and dealt with some tough series against New Zealand and Australia.

Now, India will need a new Test captain for the upcoming five-Test series in England, with Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant as potential options. Sources say Shubman Gill is the leading candidate to take over as captain.
