Rishabh Pant, the wicketkeeper-batter for the Indian cricket team, might face some trouble with the International Cricket Council (ICC) after a tense exchange with umpire Paul Reiffel on Day 3 of the first Test against England. It all kicked off during the 61st over when Pant got upset about the state of the ball after Mohammed Siraj was hit for a boundary by Harry Brook. He went up to the umpire to check it out, but even after Reiffel gave it the okay, Pant wasn’t convinced. Frustrated, he threw the ball onto the field and walked away. Commentator Mark Butcher called it a needless moment.
Now, Pant could be facing two potential charges under the ICC’s Code of Conduct. The first is for showing dissent toward the umpire’s decision, given that he got into a heated argument. The second charge relates to throwing the ball in an inappropriate way, which is against the rules.
On the bright side, Pant also made some history recently by completing his 150th catch as a wicketkeeper, becoming the third Indian to reach this milestone. He achieved this after Prasidh Krishna got Ollie Pope to edge a shot that landed in Pant’s hands. The other two Indians who have more catches than Pant are Syed Kirmani (160) and MS Dhoni (256). As of now, Pant has a total of 151 catches and 15 stumpings, making him the third most successful keeper in India’s cricket history, behind Dhoni, who holds both records.
