Rishabh Pant Or Sanju Samson? Gautam Gambhir Picks His Wicket-keeper Choice For T20 World Cup

As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the T20 World Cup 2024, Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson earned spots due to their impressive performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Although both are included in the 15-member squad only one will be chosen as the wicketkeeper in the playing XI.

The mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders Gautam Gambhir was also asked about his choice for the wicket-keeper in the upcoming T20 World Cup.

While having a chat with Sportskeeda, Pant said, “While Pant has batted in the middle order in IPL, Sanju has batted in the top order.”

“Pant being a left-hander batter can bring variety to the team’s middle order,” he asserted.

Gambhir’s perspective is that while Sanju Samson can be deployed as a No. 4 or No. 5 batsman, Rishabh Pant’s inherent suitability for the wicketkeeper-batter position provides him with an edge over the Rajasthan Royals captain.

“Looking at Team India’s combination, we need the wicketkeeper in that position and not in the top order,” he affirmed.

Gambhir also said that Sanju Samson has been more consistent with the bat in comparison to Rishabh Pant. If management goes with this criteria, he will be prioritized over DC’s captain.

“But again, if they see that Sanju can score more runs at number six or seven, they could go with him as well. Whoever plays, I think we should back that player,” he concluded.
