The third edition of WPL 2025 got off to a famous start when Gujarat Giants faced Royal Challengers Bengaluru during the season opener. The two sides met on Friday, February 14, at Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara, and performances were brilliant right from the very beginning
The clash with GG and RCB began with Gujarat Giants coming to bat first after losing the toss. Perfect in her innings, opening batter Beth Mooney scored 56 runs from 42 balls. Moreover, newly appointed skipper Ashleigh Gardner scored 79* runs from 37 balls against Gujarat Giants in the first innings of the game to post 201 runs on the scoreboard.
RCB made a poor start to their pursuit of the massive total, losing two early wickets in the chase. But RCB surged ahead with immense knocks from Ellyse Perry (57 out of 34) and Richa Ghosh (64* off 27), completing the enormous task and making it the highest successful run chase in WPL history.
Along with rewriting several records, this match also became the one with the highest aggregate total score in the tournament’s history. 403 runs scored in that match between GG and RCB is the highest aggregate total in WPL history.
The second place is taken by 391 runs in a match between GG and RCB in WPL 2023. The third place goes to the match between RCB and DC, with 386 runs scored in the first season of the tournament. The opening game of WPL 2025 may be remembered for quite a long time, and after laying down the gauntlet early in the competition, Smriti Mandhana’s side will be keen to repeat such exploits in their forthcoming fixtures.
