Shubman Gill, the Indian captain, played a key role in India’s win in the second Test versus England, tying the five-match series at 1-1. This was Gill’s first win as Test captain. India won by 336 runs, and Gill scored a total of 430 runs in both innings. This is the second-highest total ever scored by a player in a Test.
After the win, former India cricketer and head coach Ravi Shastri praised Gill. Shastri said, As a captain, it was the best, a perfect 10. When you’re down one in the series, you can’t ask for more from a captain than to bat like Don Bradman, scoring 269 and 161, and then go on to win the game.
Gill’s great start to the series has given him three centuries. In two Tests, he has scored 585 runs, making him the highest run-scorer in the series so far. Because of this, Gill’s Test average has gone up from just over 35 to almost 43 in just two matches.
Shastri was also impressed with Gill’s captaincy and choices, mainly the choice to pick Akash Deep as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement.
Shastri stated, Your captaincy was very reactive in the first test match, but you were proactive in the next game. By picking Akash Deep, you may have found the best seamer for English conditions in this Indian lineup. He will cause trouble for England as this series goes on.
After the win, Gill confirmed that Bumrah will be back for the third Test at Lord’s. But, because Akash Deep took ten wickets in the match, he will likely stay in the lineup.
