Ravi Shastri drops a cryptic remark on Dhoni and Rohit’s captaincy style

Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri has complimented Rohit Sharma, calling him “one of the best ever” and saying his leadership is as good as that of the famous Indian captain MS Dhoni. Shastri said this in the most recent episode of The ICC Review, where he pointed out Rohit’s excellent guidance and smart thinking in white-ball cricket.

Rohit Sharma’s time as India’s T20I captain was very successful. He broke Dhoni’s record for the most wins as a T20I captain, getting 49 victories in 62 matches, while Dhoni had 41 wins from 72 games. Shastri stressed that both captains showed great tactical skills, making it hard to pick one over the other.

Rohit guided India to their first T20 World Cup championship since 2007, with a perfect performance leading to a win in Barbados this past June. India didn’t lose a single game, winning eight out of nine, with one match not producing a winner. Shastri praised Rohit’s cool attitude and smart strategies, especially during important parts of the tournament.

“Rohit is really close to the top, and I believe he was incredibly smart in this year’s T20 World Cup,” Shastri added. “His calmness and the skill to use players like Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, or even Axar Patel exactly when they were needed was impressive to watch.”

India’s exciting turnaround in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa, where they managed to protect a 30-run lead in the last 30 balls while the South Africans still had six wickets left, demonstrated Rohit’s leadership. Important contributions from Bumrah, Pandya, and Suryakumar Yadav, all under Rohit’s guidance, helped India claim their second championship.

Shastri also commended Rohit for his accomplishments as a batsman, emphasizing his crucial role in limited-overs cricket. Rohit has scored 14,846 runs, including three double centuries, 33 centuries, and 87 half-centuries in One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). His impact on the sport is undeniable. Rohit has won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup twice (in 2007 and 2024) and the ICC Champions Trophy, and he holds the record for the most sixes in T20Is.

“A major player in limited-overs cricket,” Shastri commented. “One of the greatest ever. One of the finest players to have graced the game. He would be a standout choice for any limited-overs team, regardless of the period. His exceptional skills at the top of the order make him unique.”

Shastri pointed out Rohit’s strong batting, which includes five T20I centuries, tying him with Australia’s Glenn Maxwell for the most in that format. Rohit’s capability to hit big shots while maintaining a high level of technical skill distinguishes him from others.

“When you compare him to Virat Kohli, Virat is more refined and often plays along the ground,” Shastri said. “This player, on the other hand, is very explosive. He has the strength to hit the ball out of any stadium and can challenge fast bowlers. He has the skills to handle quick deliveries and can also dominate spin bowling.”
