Revered BCCI for keeping DRS in the domestic circuit, Team India veteran Ravichandran Ashwin inhaled fresh air into the cricketing fraternity.
In his post on X (previously known as Twitter), Ashwin indicated that inclusion of DRS could serve as an assist to batting technique for long-term benefit before proceeding to international levels.
By highlighting Ricky Bhui’s dismissal at the hands of Manav Suthar against India D during Duleep Trophy 2024 as an example, Ashwin portrayed a significant technical flaw on part of the batting which could have been ignored if DRS was not operational.
In an attempt to defend the delivery, the batter pulled his bat behind him on the pad. What seemed like an ordinary defensive shot turned out to be expensive as he was dismissed lbw (leg before wicket).
Ashwin pointed out that if it were during pre-drivers, bat behind pad would have meant that the batter was not out. But now with high standard camera and ultra-edge, the third umpire determines whether the batter had nicked it first or not at all
The veteran spinner believes this flaw might be taken up into his technique for good and very probably cost him a place in the national team trying to fix it at later stages of his career.
In Duleep Trophy, India C has the upper hand against India D needing just 124 runs to win with eight wickets remaining in their account whereas in another match India A trails by 113 runs with two wickets in hand in their first innings.
As Team India prepares for the home Test series against Bangladesh followed by New Zealand, Ashwin is expected to return to action soon. The spinner must be in good condition as the cricketing calendar approaches Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024 which will take place in Australia.
