In their critical Lahore Champions Trophy game, Afghanistan scored 8 runs over England on Wednesday, Afghanistan turned off another massive killing. Afghanistan’s second victory over England came at an International Cricket Council (ICC) event; they also defeated the latter at the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. Back then, ex India all-rounder Ajay Jadeja was their advisor and worked free of charge for them. Afghanistan had this time chosen ex Pakistan captain Younis Khan to be their mentor for this event. Likewise, Younis had no economic advantages.
Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Rashid Latif has now disclosed that Younis is coaching Afghanistan following his rejection of a job with the Pakistan cricket team.
Younis Khan turned down Pakistan cricket to cooperate with Afghanistan. Regarding Geo News program “Haarna Mana Hai,” Latif said there would be no monetary advantages.
ACB (Afghanistan Cricket Board) chief executive Naseeb Khan has spoken up on Younis&’s nomination ahead of the Champions Trophy.
Given that the Champions Trophy is in Pakistan, a gifted and seasoned player from the host nation needed to be assigned a mentor. At the time of appointment, Khan had already had effective experience with ODI World Cup 2023 and T20I World Cup 2024 hosting countries; mentors.
Afghanistan had also appointed former West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo as their mentor for the T20 World Cup last year, for those new to the country.
On Friday, Afghanistan will face off against Australia. If they can pull off another surprise, they will advance to semi-finals regardless of other game results.
Looking forward to their next must-win match against Australia, Trott also stated that the Afghanistan team will draw confidence from their strong performances against the Aussies in last World Cup games.
“Since I been coach, we have faced three times Australia and we have been in the game in each of those games. That said, we ought to be quite confident.
Trott said during the post-match press conference: “And I believe Afghanistan will never be taken lightly ever again—certainly what happened in the World Cup, T20 World Cup—as I tell the players also.”
The Englishman added, “I see every game we go into as going to be close and every game we play we will win.”
