The England cricket team might be planning a reunion with some Indian Premier League (IPL) connections as they want to make changes in their coaching staff. There are rumors that the current head coach for white-ball matches, Matthew Mott, will leave next week. England is considering bringing in a well-known coach to join their team. Even though they had a poor performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup and didn’t make it to the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup, England is expected to keep Jos Buttler as their captain. Buttler’s colleague at Rajasthan Royals, Kumar Sangakkara, is reportedly considered for the head coach position.
According to a report from The Telegraph UK, Sangakkara is among the top choices to take over Mott’s role in coaching England’s white-ball teams. Sangakkara has been the Director of Cricket for Rajasthan Royals since January 2021, during which time the team even reached the IPL final.
Buttler has become a key player for the Royals under Sangakkara’s leadership, and they could develop a strong relationship if Sangakkara leads the England cricket team.
Besides Sangakkara, former Australian player Michael Hussey and Afghanistan’s head coach, who is also a former England player Jonathan Trott, are said to be potential candidates.
Trott has guided Afghanistan to significant achievements during his time as head coach, such as sixth place in the 2023 ODI World Cup and reaching the semifinals of the 2024 T20 World Cup. Meanwhile, Hussey is already acquainted with the English team, having worked as their batting coach from 2022 to 2023.
The report also says that Andrew Flintoff, who used to be a player for England in many roles, probably won’t continue trying to become the main coach.
England has been doing well and playing boldly in Test matches with the help of their coach, Brendon McCullum. With their new coach, England wants to be the best again in shorter form
