Why did Rajasthan Royals went So hard for this underrated Star in IPL 2026 auction? Here’s the answer

A comprehensive network of scouts and social media platforms enabled Rajasthan Royals to identify an overlooked wicket-keeper talent, Ravi Singh, just before the IPL 2026 auction that took place on December 16. The team beat the champions of the previous year, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who also showed interest in the Railways batter and keeper, on the auction table. The auction war, which kicked off with an amount of INR 30 lakh, finally saw RR getting the player’s services for INR 95 lakh after a fierce battle.

The team was after a homegrown middle-order batting option due to the transfer of Sanju Samson to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Nitish Rana to Delhi Capitals (DC). They regarded Ravi Singh as the ideal candidate for that role.

Rajasthan Royals Auction Room BTS Before Acquiring Ravi Singh

In a video shared by the franchise on the YouTube platform, the RR think-tank, which included head coach Kumar Sangakkara and batting coach Vikram Rathour alongside the owner and analyst, had a very serious talk regarding their domestic batting needs. Ravi Singh turned out to be the second choice for the middle order, with Kartik Sharma, picked by CSK, initially being considered the first choice.

During a very important talk, Sangakkara inquired, “How much better is Ravi Singh?”

The analyst replied, “Ravi and Tejaswi (Dahiya) were almost at the same level.”

Rathour took part in the conversation, highlighting the possible need for a right-handed batsman given the left-handed batsmen-heavy top-order. But Sangakkara raised a red flag, citing RCB’s interest in Ravi, and pointed out that he had come across a couple of social media posts which were indicating that the Railways batter might be on their top priority list.

That worry did turn out to be true at the auction table where RCB made the first bid for Ravi starting at INR 30 lakh. RR kept on contending until RCB finally pulled out at INR 95 lakh.

Why Rajasthan Royals Went Hard for Ravi Singh at IPL 2026 Auction?

Sangakkara elaborated upon the impact of social media and modern scouting on the franchises’ quest for the uncapped talent.

“Social media is an excellent way to illustrate this point as many scouts post videos that we sometimes do not catch. It is really interesting to see our feeds full of updates about players. Our analysts are always monitoring social media closely and they are also following a few pundits or scouts who are giving useful insights regarding players’ trends and performances,” Sanga said.

Ravi Singh’s domestic performance supports the decision. During the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26, the left-hander scored a total of 345 runs in four innings at an average of 115 with a strike rate of 129.69, including one century and three fifties. He was also the leader in the six-hitting category with 22 sixes and 29 fours. In T20s, the 20-year-old has so far scored 295 runs in nine innings at an average of 42.1 with a strike rate of 174.55 and two fifties.

Overall, his 50-over statistics are 454 runs in eight innings at 75.66 with a strike rate of 127.52. These figures together with his audacious batting against fast and slow bowlers alike were sufficient to sway the Rajasthan Royals into thinking that Ravi Singh could be the long-term Indian middle-order and wicketkeeping solution they have been looking for after Samson. He is also an ideal backup for Dhruv Jurel.
