At the Providence Stadium in Guyana during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Afghanistan made history thanks to the contributions of Ibrahim Zadran and wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Uganda were the opponents. The two established their control and attacked Uganda’s bowling to set the tone for the team.
Afghanistan’s greatest stand for any wicket in the T20 World Cup history was achieved by Zadran and Gurbaz, who put up 154 runs for the first wicket in just 87 balls. At the 2016 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Mohammad Nabi and Samiullah Shinwari’s 98-run partnership for the fifth wicket against Zimbabwe was the highest point total for Afghanistan.
In Afghanistan’s T20I history, Zadran and Gurbaz’s combination is just the second to score 100 runs at the opening wicket together. Afghanistan’s first-ever century-run opening partnership in Twenty20 Internationals was achieved by Hazratullah Zazai and Usman Ghani.
In Dehradun, 2019 Ghani and Zazai had both amassed 236 against Ireland at the first wicket. The opening partnership of Zadran and Gurbaz, which stands at 154 runs, is noteworthy since it is the second highest partnership in the history of the premier competition.
The highest opening-wicket partnership in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is held by Jos Buttler and Alex Hales. To reach this milestone, the English duo scored 170* runs against India in the previous edition’s Adelaide quarterfinal.
Gurbaz crushed Uganda’s T20 World Cup debut with 76 off just 45 balls, four boundaries, and as many sixes. At a strike rate of 168.88, he batted, giving Zadran enough time to get his shot off. Uganda’s assault was completely destroyed by Zadran, 22, who needed some time to get used to the conditions in Guyana before smashing 70 off of 46 balls.
Nine fours and a maximum adorned Zadran’s knock. After the partnership was broken in the fifteenth over, Uganda re-entered the match and orchestrated a late comeback that reduced the Afghans to just 183.
