Just days ago, the Indian Test cricket team said goodbye to two of its top players, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both of whom were key to the team’s success. Their retirements caught everyone off guard since neither had hinted that they were stepping down. Rohit had even expressed excitement about the upcoming tour of England, and it seemed Kohli was also eager to play in India’s next international event. But it looks like that won’t happen.
Before Rohit and Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin had already retired from international cricket last December. Ashwin praised his former teammates, noting their different styles. “Both Kohli and Rohit are like ice and fire. They balanced each other out, he said in a video message.
He also mentioned that if Rohit hadn’t hurt his ankle before his debut in February 2010, his Test career might have been as impressive as Kohli’s. Both had amazing careers. Rohit could have done what Kohli did if he hadn’t missed his chance to debut. He sat out for four years and finally made his debut in 2013,” Ashwin explained.
Rohit ended up playing 67 Tests, while Kohli played 123. “Experience can’t be bought. Virat’s energy and Rohit’s calm will surely be missed, he added as the Indian team prepares for a new chapter. But Ashwin also reminded everyone that retirement happens to every player. “No matter how good you are, even Sachin Tendulkar had to hang up his boots someday, he said.
