R Ashwin drops a bizarre statement on Shubman Gill’s appointment on being the Vice captain says “I will not say it was…”

The selection of Shubman Gill as vice-captain of the Indian cricket team for Champions Trophy 2025 has started a major buzz among fans and experts alike. While some feel it is a right choice, others are of the opinion that Hardik Pandya could have been a good option. Former India spinner R Ashwin added in the discussion more to support the selectors for making a ‘futuristic’ call, and he remarked that this is suggestive of selectors keeping Gill earmarked for the captaincy later on.

“One should only think about whom else we could have named as vice-captain from the current squad. I will not say it was right or wrong. The other point that was raised was that he was vice-captain in the last series as well. I might be wrong, but I presume he has had a stint as a vice-captain in Test matches too. I would think this decision is futuristic because the management might be considering who could be their leader ultimately,” Ashwin said in a clip on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin subsequently mentioned that Gill is made the right choice due to his likely regularity in the playing XI. Other competitors to earn that vice-captain status are battling for their position on the team, like Rishabh Pant and Axar Patel.

“Axar Patel has been made the vice-captain for the upcoming T20 series against England. The competition between Axar Patel and Jadeja is stiff for which one will make it to the XI. If we take a look at Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul, the latter is indeed the incumbent keeper.

“There is a possibility that both Pant and Rahul play but the vice-captaincy was given to that player who is guaranteed a place in the playing XI. If Shubman is to become a captain later, then Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah could help guide him,” he added.
