In a sad time for cricket fans, former Indian cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad died after a long fight with blood cancer. He was 71 years old. This news has deeply affected people across the country, and many important people from the cricket world and beyond have expressed their sympathy.
Before his passing, Jay Shah, the secretary of the BCCI, promised to give INR 1 crore to the former cricketer. Other well-known cricketers like Dilip Vengsarkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Sandeep Patil, Mohinder Amarnath, Ravi Shastri, and Kirti Azad also helped by trying to raise money.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his sadness on social media, saying: “Mr. Anshuman Gaekwad will be remembered for his work in cricket. He was a talented player and a great coach. I am saddened by his passing. My sympathies go to his family and fans. Peace be with him.”
Gaekwad participated in 40 Test matches and 15 One Day Internationals for India between 1975 and 1987. He achieved a significant milestone by scoring 200 runs against Pakistan in a Test match in 1983 in Jalandhar. His last appearance for India was in a One Day International against the West Indies in December 1987.
Gaekwad also held the position of head coach for the Indian men’s cricket team. In 2000, under his guidance, India came in second place in the Champions Trophy.
Gaekwad’s death signifies the end of a cricket legend who not only performed exceptionally well on the field but also made substantial contributions as a coach. His impact will be remembered and appreciated by the cricket community and fans.
