In the second Test against England, Shubman Gill made a double century (269) for India in the first innings. At Edgbaston in Birmingham, Gill batting at No. 4 scored 269 runs off 387 balls. The right handed batter from Punjab hit 30 fours and three sixes for India.
This double century in the first innings is Gill’s first 200 plus score in Test cricket and he joins the elite club of Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Virender Sehwag and Chris Gayle. He is now the fifth cricketer to score a double century in both Test and ODI format. Gill had scored 208 in an ODI against New Zealand in Hyderabad on January 18, 2023.
Tendulkar was the first to achieve this, he scored his double century in February 2010. He scored 6 double centuries in 200 Tests and 1 in 463 ODIs in his 24 year career. Sehwag matched Sachin’s record in December 2011 with 219 runs against West Indies in an ODI in Indore. In his 14 year career, Sehwag scored 6 centuries (including 2 300s) in Tests and 1 double century in ODIs.
Rohit, the current ODI captain of India has 3 double centuries in ODIs and 1 in Tests. He scored 209 against Australia in 2013, 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014 and 208* against Sri Lanka in 2017. His Test double century was against South Africa in Ranchi in 2019, he scored 212 runs off 255 balls in the first innings.
Gayle is the only non Indian batter with double centuries in both Tests and ODIs. In his 22 year career for West Indies he played 103 Tests and 301 ODIs, he scored 1 double century and 2 triple centuries in Tests and 1 200 plus score in ODIs. During 2015 ODI World Cup against Zimbabwe in Canberra on February 24, 2025, Gayle scored 215 runs off 147 balls.
