The Pakistan Cricket Board has refuted speculation that Imran Khan’s name would be removed from one of the enclosures at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore due to his imprisonment for corruption. Rumors were swirling that PCB had chosen to remove the name of the former captain who won the World Cup in 1992 from one of the enclosures because of the ‘current political situation’.
An official PCB said that names of enclosures remain unchanged and will remain as they were before, but he did not take names.
The stadium has been renovated for the Champions Trophy, which begins on February 19.
The Imran Khan enclosure, which is one of the VIP stands in the stadium, has existed at the venue since 1992.
The former Prime Minister now holds residence in Attock jail of Punjab province and has strongly denied corruptibility charges against him, asserting that he has become a victim of political vendetta.
A court recently convicted Khan, along with his wife Bushra Bibi, in a corruption case and sentenced him to 14 years of imprisonment and her to seven years.
Khan, who is chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, presently serves as opposition to Pakistan Muslim League (N), Pakistan Peoples Party, and the ruling coalition government.
The Punjab province is governed by a PML (N) government led by Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of former premier, Nawaz Sharif.
