Major League Cricket in the United States is expected to include Pat Cummins, the captain of Australia that won the ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship, in the 2018 season. The league’s next big addition, after fellow Australians Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, Spencer Johnson, Steve Smith, and Jake Fraser Mcgurk, will be Cummins.
Cricbuzz reports that Cummins will play for the San Francisco Unicorns in the 2019 MLC and will probably replace Aaron Finch when the latter retires. He will be joining two other Australians who have joined the team: Matt Short and Jake Fraser-McGurk.
With Australia’s trip to New Zealand in February, Cummins’ demanding cricket schedule will continue with this competition. In his first-ever T20 captaincy, he recently guided Sunrisers Hyderabad into the 2024 Indian Premier League final. Last week’s lopsided showdown match between Cummins’ SRH and Kolkata Knight Riders proved to be the final straw.
Although Cummins lost, his accomplishments on the international circuit say volumes about him as captain. He has guided Australia to triumph in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship. He also guided Australia to a 2-2 draw in a five-match series last year, which allowed them to keep the Ashes in England.
On July 5, which is five days after the T20 World Cup in the Americas, the 2017 MLC will get underway. The league became the second Associate-run franchise competition to receive List-A status when it was granted by the International Cricket Council (ICC) recently. UAE’s ILT20 was the initial recipient of the List-A status.
At Church Street Park in Morrisville, the tournament’s second edition will begin at 5 p.m. with the champions, MI New York, facing the runner-ups, Seattle Orcas. The Texas Super Kings and LA Knight Riders will play a doubleheader at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas to start the season.
