Pakistan’s Captain Babar Azam Expresses Concerns Over Asia Cup 2023 Schedule

As the anticipation mounts for the commencement of Asia Cup 2023, Pakistan’s cricket captain, Babar Azam, has raised pertinent questions about the tight scheduling of the tournament mere hours before their inaugural match against Nepal in Multan on Tuesday. Initially slated to be held entirely in Pakistan, the tournament has changed plans due to India’s reluctance to travel to Pakistan. Consequently, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) adopted a hybrid approach, designating both Pakistan and Sri Lanka as hosts. This innovative strategy marks a historic first in Asia Cup’s history, as the competition will unfold across two countries simultaneously.

The concept of a hybrid model has been introduced to accommodate India’s reservations, causing the tournament’s matches to be split between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. While India is set to play all their matches in Sri Lanka, the remaining five teams – Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Nepal – will traverse between the two host nations quickly. This unique arrangement presents an unprecedented challenge for the teams, requiring swift travel and adaptation to varying conditions.

Pakistan, the host nation for the opening match against Nepal, faces a particularly intense schedule. Following their initial clash, they will embark on a swift journey to Sri Lanka for a high-profile encounter against India in Pallekele on September 2. This whirlwind sequence continues as Pakistan returns to Lahore for a Super Four game on September 6 and subsequently makes another trip to Sri Lanka for the next match on September 9.

Expressing his viewpoint on the tight schedule, Babar Azam highlighted his preference for the entire tournament to have taken place in Pakistan. “If you ask me, it would have been good if the whole tournament would have been held in Pakistan, but unfortunately, nothing can be done about it,” Babar expressed during the pre-tournament media conference. The skipper emphasized their professional readiness to tackle the demanding schedule, encompassing extensive travel and back-to-back matches.

To mitigate the challenges posed by the demanding schedule, Babar Azam shared insights into their meticulous planning. The team’s coaches and support staff have devised strategies to optimize player utilization and minimize fatigue. Flight timings have been carefully arranged to ensure players receive adequate rest between matches, a crucial aspect in maintaining their performance levels.

While Babar Azam remained tight-lipped about their strategy for the much-anticipated match against India, he conveyed his expectation that Pakistan would deliver their best performance. “We want to continue with this momentum. Pakistan’s match against India will be a high-intensity game, and we want to play our best cricket on the given day,” he affirmed.

Babar Azam hailed as one of the foremost contemporary batsmen, expressed his satisfaction with the current state of Pakistan cricket. Notably, Pakistan’s team is ranked No. 1 in ODIs, with several players securing positions within the top 10 rankings. Babar emphasized his role in elevating the team’s standards and mindset, setting a benchmark for excellence. He asserted that with elevated expectations, the team’s performances must be consistently exceptional to ensure victory.

As Asia Cup 2023 unfolds, Pakistan’s team under Babar Azam’s leadership faces the dual challenges of navigating a demanding schedule and delivering standout performances against formidable opponents.
