MS Dhoni might take charge of Chennai Super Kings again when they face Delhi Capitals in an IPL 2025 game on Saturday. Indian Express says that Ruturaj Gaikwad’s status for the match is still up in the air after he got injured on his forearm. He took a hit to his right arm from a ball bowled by Tushar Deshpande during the game against Rajasthan Royals. They noted that Gaikwad didn’t practice before this match, and CSK batting coach Mike Hussey mentioned they’ll decide on him right before the game. With no other clear captain in the squad, it looks like Dhoni will step in to lead the team in front of the home fans in Chennai.
“Yeah, we’re hoping he’s going to try and have a bat today for training. It’s still a bit sore, but it’s getting better every day. So, we’re really hopeful he’ll be fine for tomorrow,” Hussey said the day before the match.
When asked about who might captain the team if Gaikwad can’t play, Hussey joked about Dhoni. “I’m not sure, actually. I haven’t really thought about that too much. But I know (Stephen) Fleming and Rutu could have some ideas.”
“There’s a young guy behind the stumps. Maybe he can step up. He’s done it before, so who knows,” Hussey added, sounding a bit unsure.
The pitch at MA Chidambaram is expected to be slow and good for spin. The conditions in the afternoon won’t help with the dew, meaning winning the toss might not matter that much, and teams will need to be smart with their bowling and batting.
Historically, CSK has had the upper hand against DC at Chepauk, but given the current form and balance of the teams, things might be leaning towards Delhi. A win for them could put them at the top of the table, while CSK needs to turn things around quickly before it gets out of hand. Even though Delhi is doing well right now, CSK has won 19 out of the 30 matches they’ve played against each other, with DC only getting 11 wins.
