Not Hardik Pandya, But This Player Likely To Be The Vice-Captain Of India In Asia Cup And ODI World Cup

Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya are currently the top contenders to serve as stand-in captains for the Indian cricket team in the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 and the ICC ODI World Cup. While Hardik Pandya has been leading the team in T20Is for India in the absence of Rohit Sharma since the previous edition of the T20 World Cup, Jasprit Bumrah has taken on the leadership role for a less experienced Indian squad in a three-match T20I series against Ireland.

Both of these star players are at the forefront of contention for the position of vice-captain in the Indian cricket team. The Asia Cup 2023 will be played in hybrid culture to be hosted jointly by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. On the other side, the ODI World Cup 2023 will be solely organised by India which is happening for the first time in BCCI’s history.

A report from the PTI news agency suggests that Jasprit Bumrah might hold a minor advantage over the all-rounder due to his prior experience in leading the Indian team. This incident happened during the rescheduled fifth Test against England last year when the regular captain Rohit Sharma was not there due to his ill-health.

While having a conversation to PTI, a BCCI source said,“If you look in terms of leadership seniority, Bumrah is ahead of Pandya as he captained the Test team in 2022. He has also been ODI vice-captain before Pandya during the ODI tour of South Africa.”

“Don’t be surprised if you see Bumrah being made an ODI deputy to Rohit for both Asia Cup and World Cup. There is a reason why he was handed captaincy in Ireland instead of Ruturaj,” the PTI source added.

BCCI is looking to reduce the workload of Rohit Sharma. The batter has turned 36 this year and the management is experimenting with different players for the role of captain as well.
