Not Gambhir but this Indian star will accompany team India for the Zimbabwe tour

VVS Laxman and his team at the National Cricket Academy may go with the Indian team to Zimbabwe for a five-match T20I series starting on July 6, while Gautam Gambhir is likely to begin his coaching role during the Sri Lanka tour. The team for the Zimbabwe series is expected to be announced by the end of this week, on either June 22 or 23. Right now, young players from the IPL, including those on BCCI’s special list, are training under Laxman at the NCA.

Gambhir is the top choice to be the head coach of the men’s team, beating out former women’s team coach WV Raman. The official announcement is just a matter of time and could happen in the next few days. Gambhir will also have the opportunity to choose his coaching staff, including a batting, bowling, and fielding coach.

It is believed that Gambhir could begin his role in mid-July when India goes to Sri Lanka for a limited-overs series with three T20 matches and three one-day internationals.

“There’s a chance that Laxman and some NCA coaches will join the fresh squad going to Zimbabwe. Whenever Dravid and the main coaching staff take short breaks, Laxman and the NCA team have always stepped in to help,” a BCCI insider said to PTI, asking to remain unnamed.

A group of young players will travel to Zimbabwe, including six to seven players from the T20 World Cup team. Three new players, almost sure to be considered, are Riyan Parag, Abhishek Sharma, and all-rounder Nitish Reddy. Additionally, either Yash Dayal or Harshit Rana might receive their first call-up. The team captain will be either Hardik Pandya, if he doesn’t request a break, or Suryakumar Yadav, who has previously led the T20 team in matches against Australia and in South Africa.
