Following the conclusion of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, the Indian cricket team is set to embark on a transition plan aimed at reshaping the squad for the future. With a new chief selector at the helm, discussions will be held with key players such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin, and several other senior members. Additionally, Ajit Agarkar is expected to assume the role of head of the selection committee after his departure as Delhi Capitals’ assistant coach.
Amid speculations surrounding the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the T20I squad, concerns have arisen due to their workload across multiple formats and the demanding schedule of the Indian Premier League (IPL). A senior BCCI official has voiced these concerns, stating that while both players are undoubtedly significant assets, it may not be sustainable for them to continue playing all three formats alongside the IPL.
The upcoming transition will witness a shift in focus towards T20 cricket and Test matches, particularly after the culmination of the 50-over World Cup in India. In the white-ball formats, Hardik Pandya is expected to officially replace Rohit Sharma as the captain. The team is set to play an extensive number of 61 T20 matches during the next FTP (Future Tours Programme) cycle in preparation for the T20 World Cup in 2024.
The absence of a T20 World Cup victory since 2007 has prompted the Indian cricket fraternity to intensify their efforts to reclaim the prestigious title. With the IPL gaining momentum and a pool of talented players emerging, the BCCI officials are eager to see the national team lift the T20 World Cup trophy once again. Post the 50-over World Cup, the newly formed selection committee will work on formulating a blueprint to strategize for future T20 tournaments.

“We haven’t won a T20 World Cup after 2007, and that’s not good for the Indian team. IPL is growing at a fast pace and with the kind of players coming up, we want to lift the trophy again. The selection committee will make a blueprint after the 50-over WC,” the official added.
