Nepali cricketer Sandeep Lamichanne taken into police custody over rape accusation

After arriving at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepalese cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane was detained and charged with raping a juvenile. Earlier in the day, Lamichhane posted on his official social media page that he would return to Nepal and “completely participate in all stages of the inquiry” in addition to “fighting legal battle to establish my innocence.”

Lamichhane was detained as he arrived at the airport, according to the news agency ANI.

In a previous post on his official Facebook profile, Lamichhane promised to pursue justice while denying any misconduct.
In a Facebook status posted early Thursday morning, he wrote, “As per my sincere commitment to submit myself to the authority of Nepal, I am landing at 10:00 am from Qatar Airways in the Tribhuvan International Airport at Kathmandu.”
Again denying any misconduct, the 25-year-old former captain of the national team announced that he would seek legal counsel to defend himself against unjustified accusations.
“I am sure I will get justice and will return to the cricket ground soon to make the name and fame of my beloved country and I pray for a speedy trial. I will fully cooperate in all stages of the investigation and will fight a legal battle to prove my innocence. Let justice prevail.”

On August 21, a 17-year-old girl submitted a complaint stating that Lamichhane had taken her to many locations in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur before bringing her to a hotel in Sinamangal, Kathmandu, where she had been raped the previous evening.
Since he has been at large and his location is unknown since the complaint against him was filed, INTERPOL (International Criminal Police Organization) has already issued a diffusion notice.
