MS Dhoni had the chance to play with and later lead some of the greatest cricketers in India. He played alongside legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble, and Yuvraj Singh. So, it’s no surprise that when asked to pick his dream team without worrying about where they’re from or when they played, he still chose Indian players. After naming a few, he explained why he doesn’t usually pick a dream team.
“Yeah, I would stick to my Indian players, Dhoni said on a podcast with Raj Shamani. “Viru pa (Virender Sehwag) would open the innings, along with Sachin and Dada (Sourav Ganguly). The thing is, just picture everyone at their best. When you watch them play, you think there’s nobody better. But cricket has its ups and downs, so it’s tough to make a choice. Growing up, we all got to see these players shine.”
Dhoni mentioned that since these players played a big part in India’s cricket success, he prefers to just enjoy their performances. “You know, when Yuvi (Yuvraj) was hitting those six sixes, you didn’t want to watch anyone else. So, why should I pick just one? Why not just enjoy everyone? They all helped India win many tournaments,” he explained.
He also noted that a lot of past performances might not be well-known today. There are many great talents from earlier generations that he might not be aware of, but the ones he has seen at their best always blow him away. Dhoni, who hung up his international boots in 2020, is still active in the IPL, playing for the Chennai Super Kings.
