Pakistan has exited early from the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025 amidst much condemnation from fans against players and criticism against the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi. According to Geo News, it has not been even earlier for five days since the entry of hosts Pakistan into an ICC tournament after a gap of 29 long years.
Opposition Leader in the National Assembly and Pakistan People Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) politician Omar Ayub expressed his dissatisfaction with PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and asked him to resign.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, after the exit of the Green Brigade from the ongoing marquee event, the National Assembly Omar Ayub, while speaking to the media, cited Mohsin Naqvi for the poor performance by the team in the ongoing event and also asked the management to show him the door for “repeated failures,” as claimed by the source Geo News.
Continuing the lamentable performance at all events in ICC, the current ICC champions lost two matches on the trot in the group stage against the New Zealand side and arch-rivals India.
To stage a win over New Zealand, the Men in Green were to be lucky by Bangladesh. But on Monday, the insatiable Kiwis brought down the Tigers with a five-wicket win in Rawalpindi and sealed destination semi-final with India.
Pakistan’s last group-stage match of Champions Trophy 2025 is against Bangladesh at the National Stadium in Rawalpindi. This match would be a dead rubber since both the teams are out of the tournament by now.
This is not the first time that the Mohd Rizwan-led side has shown such poor cricketing performance at an event of this stature. They too were underwhelming at the last two ICC events. Last year, in the T20 World Cup at West Indies and the United States, the Pakistan Cricket Team was eliminated from the tournament after two consecutive losses in the group stage against United States and then arch-rivals India.
In the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup in India, the Men in Green could win only four of the nine matches. Thus in the tournament, they ended up with a fifth position while having just eight points and again missing out on playing in the knockouts.
