The rain, coming down on Thursday heavily, washed away the foresaid match between Bangladesh vs. Pakistan. Thus continued the losing streak of Pakistan in the Champions Trophy, having not won even a single match. Both teams were already out of contention after losing their two previous games.
They were closed with covers on wet ground and puddles formed all over the field by rain which didn’t cease to pour. Very few seconds after two hours past the scheduled time for resuming the game, the match officials called it off as no improvement took place in the weather. Due to the bleak conditions, not even the toss could be done.
Both teams finished the tournament without a win, sharing a point each according to the decision of the match referee.
This will be the second match in Rawalpindi which has not commenced due to inclement weather, after a downpour caused the washout between South Africa and Australia earlier this week.
The abandonment left home fans feeling very let down, as they looked to see play at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
Pakistan’s dismal performance had generated a barrage of criticism, having lost to New Zealand (by 60 runs) and India (by six wickets).
“We wanted to do well. We wanted to perform in front of our nation. The expectations were very high. In the end, we could not perform well, which is very disappointing from our end,” said Pak captain Mohammad Rizwan.
He reflected on what lies ahead in the path: “One can learn from the mistakes. We have erred in the last few matches. Hopefully, we have learned from this.”
