The Mumbai Indians (MI) finally grabbed their first win of the IPL 2025 season, taking down the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Monday. Ashwani Kumar, a fast bowler, and opener Ryan Rickelton really stood out in the match as MI secured a solid 8-wicket victory. There was some disappointment among Mumbai fans, though, as former captain Rohit Sharma struggled again, scoring just 13 runs off 12 balls, leaving many puzzled. Former England captain Michael Vaughan spoke up about Rohit on Cricbuzz, pointing out that if another player had the same numbers, they might be dropped from the team.
Vaughan expressed his confusion about why Rohit isn’t leading the Mumbai team since he’s the captain of the Indian national team. I wonder why he’s not the captain in Mumbai if he’s doing so well with India. It doesn’t make sense to me,” said Vaughan. He also mentioned that Rohit’s current performance as a batter is falling short. Since the season kicked off, Rohit’s scores have been 0, 8, and 13. Vaughan believes that if Rohit were still captain, things might look different, as the team would see more value in his leadership.
“Now that he’s just a batter, we’re looking at his numbers and thinking they’re just not good enough,” Vaughan pointed out. He also highlighted the need for Rohit to have a chat with the management to discuss his situation.
Vaughan isn’t suggesting Rohit should be dropped, but he emphasized the need for Rohit to get back into a rhythm. “We need him to start strong. The senior players like Rohit, Trent Boult, and Suryakumar Yadav need to step up so the younger players can relax and enjoy the game. Right now, it’s tough for them because they’re being asked to carry the team,” he said.
