Shubman Gill’s performance in the England-India Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series has been all over the place. He scored 147 in the first match and 269 and 161 in the second. But in the third match at Lord’s he scored 16 and 6. He struggled in the second innings when India was chasing 193.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan thinks Gill’s technique wasn’t great in the second innings. He wrote in his column for ‘The Telegraph’ that when the pressure was on during the third evening England played their best. He said Gill didn’t seem as technically sound or composed when he batted on the fourth evening. He praised the team for their hard work on Monday in what he called a great match.
Vaughan also praised Ben Stokes and said England has never had a captain like him. Stokes doesn’t accept defeat or a bad week for his team and can turn a game around with his skill and determination.
Vaughan said Stokes partnered with Joe Root on the first evening to get a good score. And Stokes made a great run-out before lunch on day three when India seemed to be in control.
He also said Stokes took important wickets in both innings, bowled an amazing spell early on the last day and broke Jasprit Bumrah’s resistance. He just knows how to win big moments in Test matches.
Gill said one strong partnership could have changed the result of the third Test. England won by 22 runs and are now 2-1 up in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series.
India was looking to get 193 but were bowled out for 170 in the final session on Day 5. Ravindra Jadeja scored an unbeaten 61 and there were some good partnerships with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. Even after the loss Gill is hopeful and said the series score doesn’t always show how well they have played and they are looking forward to the series.
