Suryakumar Yadav joined Rohit Sharma as the second Mumbai Indians (MI) player to score multiple centuries in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He accomplished this feat during a match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday, May 6. Yadav’s century also marked the eighth time an MI player has scored a hundred in IPL history.
Besides Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma, several other players have scored centuries for the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The first to get hundred for Mumbai Indians was Sri Lankan superstar Sanath Jayasuriya (114 against CSK in 2008) and then Sachin Tendulkar smashed it in 2011 playing against Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Lendl Simmons (100 against PBKS in 2014), and recently the Australian all-rounder Cameron Green got hundred against SRH in 2023.
MI had to chase a target of 174 runs. However, their innings got off to a disappointing start as Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, and Naman Dhir were all dismissed for single-digit scores. Despite this early setback, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma came together and formed a vital partnership. They remained unbeaten and added 143 runs for the seventh wicket off 13.1 overs.
There was a phase in the match where MI didn’t score any runs off the bat for about 3 overs. Despite this, both Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma stayed calm. In the end, Mumbai managed to chase down the target with 16 balls remaining and won the match by 7 wickets.
