The Women’s Premier League (WPL) has seen two magnificent seasons; two finals, and the Delhi Capitals women remain without the trophy. The franchise has been wonderful during both editions of the tournament. Though with two top finishes in the league and competing in the finals twice, the WPL title still remains a distant trophy for the side.
To note, first, Delhi Capitals lost the final in season 2023 of WPL against Mumbai Indians, and then they went ahead and lost another final to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2024. With the beginning of a new campaign, Capitals’ skipper Meg Lanning came into the limelight, saying they look to make minor changes but will keep doing what they have been doing for the last two seasons.
Lanning feels her side has the potential to win the trophy in 2025. “We’ve had two good seasons without obviously being able to finish it off the way we would have liked in winning the title. I guess the key for us is maintaining what we’ve been doing well. We think we have been playing some really good cricket and doing a lot of things right. We’re just evolving and making a few little changes here and there that we think will make a big difference and hopefully allow us to take that next step. It’s not [a] big shift from us,” Meg Lanning told ESPNcricinfo.
And she’s added some fresh players to the roster, but even the ones who have been here earlier have improved from before. As far as I’m concerned, we’re in a solid position. Not a whole lot of changing is happening. Most of the movements have been working well. “It is just fine-tuning certain things here and there to take us to the next level,” she added.
Lanning comes to WPL 2025 as one of the most successful players, having amassed 676 runs across the two seasons of the tournament – making her the WPL’s all-time highest run-getter – and has also been in great form in the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL). Lanning’s side will be gunning for revenge in 2025 after Delhi Capitals nearly bagged the WPL title in the past two seasons.
