Matthew Hayden slams Ms Dhoni’s statement regarding powerplay

CRIC Informer

Matthew Hayden, former Australia and Chennai Super Kings cricketer, shared his thoughts on the pitch at Chepauk, saying it looked great for batting. He disagreed with MS Dhoni’s cautious strategy during the powerplay.

Kolkata Knight Riders handed Chennai a tough loss, winning by eight wickets in front of their home fans. Hayden felt Chennai needed to take charge instead of just trying to catch up. I really thought this was a 180-plus wicket. The ground looked good with its hard black soil. MS spoke about being conservative during the powerplay, but I don’t agree. Giving away 30 runs is not right, Hayden noted while discussing it on JioHotstar.

He pointed out that being too cautious puts pressure on players like Shivam Dube and Dhoni, who end up scrambling at the end. They have strong players, but being conservative holds them back. It’s putting Dhoni under pressure, making him play catch-up, Hayden explained.

Dhoni expressed disappointment over the loss and called out his batters. He urged them to focus on their game instead of panicking to turn things around in future IPL matches. Chennai only managed 103 runs, allowing Kolkata to chase it down in the 11th over, marking CSK’s biggest defeat in IPL history in terms of remaining deliveries.

It’s been a tough few nights for us. We need to face the challenges head-on. Today, we just didn’t score enough runs, Dhoni said after the match.
