An investigation has been opened regarding a possible match-fixing incident in the Dhaka Premier League. It all went down when one batter appeared to take his bat out of the crease, making it seem like he was giving the opposing wicketkeeper a chance to stump him. This situation unfolded in a crucial game, where Gulshan managed to win by just five runs after a pretty controversial stumping incident involving the Shinepukur wicketkeeper, Minhajul Abedin. During that moment, Abedin stepped out of the crease and left the ball unattended.
As they chased down the runs, Shinepukur needed six runs to clinch the win with just one wicket left and 43 balls to go. Abedin, who was holding his own at 8 runs after 34 balls, charged toward Gulshan’s spinner, Naeem Islam, but ended up leaving a wide delivery. He then spun around, placing his bat outside the crease, but instead of bringing it back to safety, he pulled it even further away. The Gulshan wicketkeeper, Alif Hasan, initially struggled to knock the bails off, but he eventually managed to complete the stumping, ending the game and securing the win for his team.
Shinepukur’s batting innings stumbled, and they ended up bowled out for 173 runs in 43 overs. This heartbreaking five-run loss meant they got relegated to the second division of the tournament—a tough break for them. Commentator Mazhar Uddin Omi expressed his shock during the broadcast, saying, “I have never seen anything like this before.”
In response to the incident, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) released a statement on Thursday acknowledging the concerns. Their Anti-Corruption Unit, along with the League’s Technical Committee, wasted no time and kicked off an investigation into the alleged irregularities of that match. The BCB stressed that they are committed to keeping the game fair and upholding discipline across all cricketing events they oversee.
At this point in the competition, Shinepukur was fighting to avoid relegation, having accumulated just two points in nine games. They only needed six runs in seven overs to beat Gulshan, who stood at 11 points before this match took a strange turn and led to their downfall.
As for the league, the last round of this season’s Dhaka Premier League is set to end next week. Following that, the top six teams will go on to compete for the title in the super league. Minhajul Abedin has been working hard in the tournament, racking up 583 runs over 21 matches at an average of 30.68, with three half-centuries to his name. Just last month, he scored an impressive unbeaten 51 against Agrani Bank Cricket Club, showing he’s definitely a player to watch.
