Prior to India’s match against Ireland on Wednesday, June 5, Steve Smith selected Virat Kohli as the leading run scorer at the T20 World Cup 2024. Kohli leads the record for most runs in the tournament’s history and finished as the top run scorer in the 2022 T20 World Cup.
After hitting 741 runs in 15 IPL games for RCB this year, Kohli is entering the T20 World Cup 2024 campaign in strong shape. This is the primary rationale for Smith’s decision to name the Indian player his choice for leading run scorer once more. Speaking to the ICC, the Australian hitter who is also a pundit believes that Kohli is playing well heading into the event.
“My top run-getter for this tournament will be Virat Kohli. He is coming off a terrific IPL and he is bringing in some great form and I think he will be the leading run-getter,” said Smith.
In the 27 T20 World Cup games he has participated in, Kohli has amassed 1141 runs. The top player from India has amassed 14 fifties at a strike-rate of over 131 over this time, with an average of 81.50. Since Kohli arrived in the United States late, he was unable to participate in India’s June 1 warm-up match against Bangladesh. The India star, nevertheless, was at his most fluid during the practice session before the match against Ireland.
With his first stroke at the training nets, Kohli took full advantage of the chance.
