Virat Kohli played an unbeaten inning of 122 runs off just 61 balls against their last match of the super 4 round against Afghanistan.
After this superb innings everyone around the corner started advocating for Kohli to open the innings with Rohit Sharma in the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia.
However, the Indian captain has now cleared all the speculation about the openers and said that KL Rahul will be his opening Partner and Virat Kohli is fixed at his no.3 position. He said that Kohli is a flexible player and he can bat at any number but KL Rahul has scored an abundance of runs over the years.
While having a conversation before the T20 series against Australia, Rohit Sharma said,”Virat Kohli is our third opener. In the last match of the Asia Cup, we were happy with the way he played. KL Rahul will open the batting in the World Cup, his performance sometimes goes quite unnoticed. He is a very important player for Team India. For us, I just want to make it clear that we are clear in our thought process. Hamare andar kya khichdi pak rahi hai wo hume pata hai (We do not have any confusion). We are very clear about what KL Rahul brings to the table for us, he is a quality player and is very important for us. His presence at the top is very crucial for us.”
Rohit also talked about the Kohli potential of opening the innings when he did it for Royal Challengers Bangalore. He said that it is good to have options available in the team.
Rohit added,”It is always nice to have options available for you. It is important going into a World Cup that you have flexibility. You want the players to be in the best shape batting at any position. When we try to do something new, that does not mean that’s a problem. For us, we understand the quality of all our players and what they bring to us. But yeah, it is an option for us, we will always keep that in mind. Since we have not taken the third opener, he opens for his franchise and he has done really well, so it is a definite option for us.”
