Kieron Pollard has been one of Chennai Super Kings’ biggest headaches. Whenever Mumbai Indians faced CSK, Chennai could never feel comfortable while he was still at the crease. A difficult chase or a batting collapse did not mean the game was over. Pollard could change it in a few overs.
He did it in league matches, playoffs and even finals. Some of Mumbai’s most memorable victories against Chennai carried his stamp.
Pollard’s Knocks That Hurt CSK
The 2013 IPL final was the clearest example. Mumbai were struggling at 52/4 when Pollard walked in. Chennai had the chance to restrict them to a small total, but he smashed 60 not out off 32 balls, taking Mumbai to 148/9. He also picked up a wicket as MI went on to win their first IPL title.
Two years later, he hurt Chennai twice in the playoffs. His 41 off 17 balls in Qualifier 1 helped Mumbai reach the final. Against CSK again in the 2015 final, he struck 36 off 18 balls, helping MI post 202/5 and claim another title.
Then came the extraordinary chase in Delhi in 2021. Chennai scored 218/4, a total that should have put their bowlers in a strong position. Pollard responded with 87 not out off 34 balls, carrying Mumbai to a four-wicket victory on the final delivery. He had also taken 2/12 in Chennai’s innings.
That was the problem for CSK: even when a match appeared to be slipping away from Mumbai, Pollard could bring them back.
Finally a Super King—Then Came the Withdrawal
So when Joburg Super Kings, Chennai’s sister franchise in SA20, bought Pollard, it was an unusual sight. The player who had repeatedly beaten the Super Kings was finally joining their side.
JSK spent R1.5 million on him at the auction. For Super Kings supporters, there was finally a reason to look forward to his finishing rather than fear it. This time, his experience and power-hitting were supposed to help their team win.
Instead, Pollard withdrew—and left JSK with a major hole in their plans.
Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed to Cricbuzz that Pollard had informed the franchise he would be unavailable. The player bought to strengthen their finishing will now have to be replaced.
How Kieron Pollard’s Withdrawal Disrupts JSK
The impact goes beyond losing one player. When a franchise buys someone like Pollard, it builds the rest of its auction strategy around the role he is expected to fill.
With an experienced finisher secured, the management can focus its remaining budget elsewhere. Other players who could perform a similar role may no longer remain priorities.
That is where JSK have suffered. They committed part of their auction budget to Pollard and planned with him in the squad. Had his unavailability been clear earlier, they could have pursued another finisher or used that allocation to strengthen the team differently.
Now the auction is over, and finding a replacement is a different challenge. The players available may not offer the same combination of late hitting, experience and ability to handle pressure.
This does not mean Pollard deliberately damaged their plans. But an unintended withdrawal can still have a serious effect on a franchise that counted on his availability.
Earlier, Pollard hurt Chennai by scoring runs for Mumbai. This time, Joburg Super Kings must repair the damage caused by losing the very player they bought to solve their finishing problem.
