“Josh Hazlewood’s figures are terrible…”: Aakash Chopra Appraises Australia’s Pace Attack For ICC ODI World Cup 2023

Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra recently shared his insights on Australia’s formidable pace attack ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup. Chopra discussed the strengths and potential weak links within the Australian pace lineup, shedding light on the key players who could shape Australia’s performance in the tournament.

On his official YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra praised Mitchell Starc’s bowling prowess in Asian conditions, emphasizing his versatility across different playing surfaces. He highlighted Starc’s impressive record in Asia, where he has taken 37 wickets in 17 matches at an average of 23.1, making him a consistent threat.

“Mitchell Starc is not just a bowler in Australia, England or favourable conditions. His numbers in Asia are equally good. 37 wickets in 17 matches at an average of 23.1 not bad at all; picking up more than two wickets per match is phenomenal. Pat Cummins is similar once again. His numbers in Asia become better.” Aakash Chopra said.
Chopra also lauded Pat Cummins’ improvements, noting that Cummins’ numbers in Asian conditions have improved even. His growth as a bowler has enabled him to thrive in varying environments.

However, when discussing the Australian pace attack, Chopra pointed out the potential weak link – Josh Hazlewood. Chopra highlighted Hazlewood’s stats in Asia, showcasing an average of 25.6 and an economy rate of 4.57. Hazlewood has secured only six wickets from eight matches in Asian conditions, leading to concerns about his effectiveness on subcontinental pitches.

Chopra emphasized Hazlewood’s struggle, particularly with an average of 61 in Asia. This statistic raises questions about his suitability for the challenging conditions that the World Cup will likely present.
“However, you see a weak link in the form of Josh Hazlewood. He has an average of 25.6 and an economy of 4.57 otherwise, but only six wickets in eight matches in Asia. He has an average of 61. Josh Hazlewood’s figures are terrible,” the 45-year-old added.

Chopra also delved into New Zealand’s bowling attack, discussing Trent Boult’s impressive overall record. While Boult’s numbers are remarkable, with an average of nearly 40 in Asian pitches, Chopra noted that he hasn’t been as effective. Boult’s strength lies in his proficiency with the new ball, and his impact diminishes as the ball gets older.

“Trent Boult’s overall numbers are phenomenal, but he has an average of nearly 40 in Asia. He has picked up only 17 wickets in 14 matches. He is not the same threat because he doesn’t pick that many wickets with the old ball. He is mostly a new-ball bowler. A lot of respect, but he is lethal only with the new ball,” Aakash Chopra further added.

Australia has recently announced their preliminary 18-member squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup, scheduled from October 5th to November 19th. The squad features a strong pace lineup, including Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Sean Abbott, Nathan Ellis, and Josh Hazlewood. Pat Cummins will lead the Australian team, and their campaign kicks off against India on October 8th at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
