Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has issued a warning to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding the comeback of Jasprit Bumrah, India’s premier fast bowler. Bumrah, who underwent back surgery and has been out of action since September last year, is expected to make his return during the T20I series against Ireland before the Asia Cup 2023. Shastri emphasized the importance of not rushing Bumrah’s return, highlighting the potential risks and consequences.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has expressed his concerns to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about the imminent return of Jasprit Bumrah to international cricket. Bumrah, who underwent back surgery and has been sidelined since September last year, is set to make his comeback during the T20I series against Ireland ahead of the highly anticipated Asia Cup 2023. However, Shastri believes that caution should be exercised, and rushing Bumrah’s return could have severe consequences.
“Bumrah is an invaluable asset for the Men in Blue, but it is crucial not to rush his comeback for the World Cup. We must learn from the case of Shaheen Afridi, who was rushed back into action and ended up being unavailable for another four months,” cautioned Shastri during an interview with The Week. He further urged the apex body to formulate a well-thought-out plan for Bumrah’s return to ensure his long-term fitness and effectiveness.
India has undeniably felt the absence of Bumrah in crucial encounters. The team’s bowling attack appeared visibly weakened during the 2022 T20 World Cup and the recently concluded World Test Championship final against Australia. The inability to fill Bumrah’s void was evident, and it highlighted the urgency of having their ace pacer back in action.
As the 2023 ODI World Cup rapidly approaches, the Indian cricket team, a two-time World Champion, finds itself in dire need of Bumrah’s skill and experience. With his unique ability to generate pace, extract bounce, and execute lethal yorkers, Bumrah has been instrumental in India’s success across all formats. His precision and accuracy in both the powerplay overs and death overs have earned him a formidable reputation in world cricket.
The Indian team management, selectors, and the BCCI must take into account the significant role Bumrah plays and carefully evaluate his readiness for international cricket. It is crucial to prioritize his long-term fitness and avoid any potential risk that may further prolong his absence from the game. A well-structured rehabilitation plan, coupled with ample rest and proper match practice, will be essential to ensure Bumrah’s seamless integration back into the team.
