Jasprit Bumrah just 5 wickets away from achieving this massive milestone

Jasprit Bumrah gets ready to spearhead India’s bowling attack in the second Test against New Zealand on Thursday (October 24) at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune. The second Test being a crucial one for the hosts to win in order for them to win the series, the world’s number one ranked bowler will get an opportunity to join star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in an elite list of players.

Bumrah, who was India’s best bowler in the first match of the series, which was held at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru last week, needs five more wickets from the Pune Test to become the second Indian bowler after Ashwin to take at least 50 scalps in a single World Test Championship edition. In the current WTC, 2023-25, he has played nine matches and taken 45 wickets.

Ashwin also in the list of bowlers in Tests for India is the second all-time leading wicket-taker and has picked at least 50 wickets in every WTC season. No other bowler in the world has achieved this. The 38-year-old cricketer took 71 wickets within 14-match series of WTC 2019-21 edition, and 61 wickets within the 13-Match WTC 2021-23 edition.

So far during this edition of the WTC, he has also claimed the wicket of 54 batsmen already in 11 matches. He finished first in the WTC 2019-21 as the player with the most wickets and is already leading the most wickets’ chart in the ongoing edition of 2023-25.

Thus so far 10 bowlers including Ashwin, Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Tim Southee, Stuart Broad, Kagiso Rabada, James Anderson, Mitchell Starc, and Ollie Robinson have taken more than 50 batters in a single edition of WTC.

The record for dismissing the highest number of batters in a single edition of the World Test Championship belongs to Lyon, who scalped 88 wickets in 20 matches during the years 2021 to 2023.

Bumrah, one of the three Indian bowlers to achieve the 100 WTC wickets mark, dismissed 34 batters in 10 matches of the 2019-21 cycle and 45 batters in 10 matches of the 2021-23 season. He missed the 2023 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the 2023 WTC final against Australia due to a back injury.
