Bumrah was ruled out of the Indian squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, and confirmed the BCCI late on Tuesday night. After a long wait over his fitness status, after suffering from a back injury back during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India’s speedster had finally been confirmed to miss the tournament. Harshit Rana, a 23-year-old pacer, has been confirmed as Bumrah’s replacement in the final 15-man squad. In another twist concerning selection, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has also been excluded from the final squad with 33-year-old mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy taking his place.
The BCCI said in a release: “Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out with a lower back injury in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. The men’s selection committee has named Harshit Rana as Bumrah’s replacement. The team has also named Varun Chakaravarthy. The spinner will replace Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was initially named in the provisional squad.”
A source said that the left-oar bowler will be away for a good five weeks owing to the acute injury around the lower back and quite another inconvenience was that the deteriorated condition of Bumrah was not clear until late last night, and despite various tests, the selector and management are waiting to hear a clear report on his state of mind.
Pacer Harshit Rana made his ODI debut during the series against England, where he took four wickets in two matches.
Another big exclusion is that of opener Yashasvi Jaiswal from the final squad, replaced by mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy.
Both Chakaravarthy and Jaiswal already made their ODI debuts from the series against England.
After banging it in the T20 series against England, picking 14 wickets in five games and receiving ‘Player of the Series’ accolades, Chakaravarthy earned his way into contention.
In 2024, Jaiswal was the highest run-scorer in India in all formats; however, he has played only a single ODI so far, in which he scored most of his runs in Test cricket.
The Jaiswal-Mohammed Siraj-Shivam Dube trio has been included as non-travelling substitutes for Team India in the wake of probable injuries.
