Jasprit Bumrah had an amazing day, taking five wickets in the first Test against England at Headingley in Leeds. He really stood out for India on Day 3, finishing with 5 for 83 in 24.4 overs, helping his team gain a narrow six-run lead after England was all out for 465. Even though he didn’t have much support, Bumrah was relentless and troublesome for the England batting lineup.
With this performance, he’s now got 14 five-wicket hauls in Tests, with 12 of those coming in matches away from home. He matched Kapil Dev for the most wickets by an Indian bowler in away Test matches. During this match, Bumrah also passed Wasim Akram to hold the record for the most wickets by an Asian bowler in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia), reaching a total of 150 wickets in just 31 matches.
On Day 2, he had already picked up three wickets, shouldering a lot of the bowling load after India’s first innings score of 471. On Day 3, he was expected to lead the attack, but his fellow pacers, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, weren’t in top form.
Bumrah started strong on Day 3, putting a no-ball mistake behind him, but unfortunately, he didn’t grab any wickets in the first session. It was Prasidh Krishna who got things rolling by dismissing Ollie Pope for 106, with Siraj following up by taking out Ben Stokes, who couldn’t convert a solid start.
Things looked a bit shaky as Brook and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith launched a counterattack, putting pressure on Shubman Gill. India’s fielding wasn’t great either, allowing England’s lower order to score more runs than expected. While Krishna got Jamie Smith out right before the second new ball, Brook really got going against the Indian bowlers.
Despite a mini-spell with the new ball, Bumrah wasn’t quite sharp. Brook reached 99 after being dropped on 83 but fell for just 99 after a quick run. Luckily, Bumrah came through at the end, taking out Chris Woakes with a fantastic delivery before finishing his five-wicket haul by dismissing Shoaib Bashir.
