Italy has secured a spot in the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, a first for their men’s cricket team. This is after Italy won the FIFA World Cup four times. The team is led by Joe Burns, an Australian former Test opener.
At the ICC T20 Men’s Europe Region final, which included five teams, Italy lost their last match to the Netherlands by nine wickets on Friday, but they still edged out Jersey because of a better net run rate. The ‘Oranje’ crew also made the cut. Italy scored 135, and the Netherlands beat that score by 9 wickets.
The Netherlands won all their games and ended with eight points. Italy and Jersey both had five points, but the ‘Azzurris’ had a Net run rate of +0.612, which was better than Jersey’s (+0.306).
Burns, the former Australia opener, has been a key player for Italy, as he can play for them because his mother is Italian. Burns played 23 Tests for Australia and scored four Test centuries. Grant Stewart, a former Kent cricketer with over 50 games in the English county circuit, is another good player.
Emilio Gay played for Italy, which was unexpected, as he recently scored 71 for England Lions against India A in an unofficial four-day Test last month. He played a big role in their shocking victory over Scotland, who often play in ICC tournaments. Gay scored 50 in Italy’s 12-run win.
Jaspreet Singh, a medium pacer of Indian descent who has played 23 T20Is, is also in the team.
Italy is celebrating this cricket success, but their national football team’s future is unclear. They didn’t get into the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups and still need to secure their place in the 2026 edition in the Americas.
