The ICC Cricket World Cup is set to take place in 2023, making it an important year for ODI cricket. Team India is going to host the marquee event and recently the team has whitewashed Sri Lanka by a margin of 3-0 and had a strong start to the year.
Questions have been raised regarding the sustainability and future of the 50-over format between the thrill of T20s and of Test cricket due to the packed international schedule in recent years.
The World Cup this year will shift everyone’s attention to the format, and for the time being, the questions will go aside. Meanwhile, Yuvraj Singh, the former all-rounder for India, noted the low attendance for the third One-Day International against Sri Lanka on January 15 in Thiruvananthapuram.
Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh took to Twitter to appreciate the solid 131-run stand between Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli. However, he couldn’t help but bring attention to the stadium’s partial emptiness. When Yuvraj questioned whether ODI cricket was dying, his former teammate Irfan Pathan stunned the crowd with an incredible reply.
Yuvraj Tweeted, “Well played @ShubmanGill hopefully goes on to make a hundred @imVkohli batting at the other end looking Solid! But concern for me half empty stadium? Is one-day cricket dying? #IndiavsSrilanka.”
Replying to it, the former Indian all-rounder Pathan said, “Bhai pads pehan lo. Aajegi jantaaa (Bro wear pads [come back playing], the crowd will come).”
About the game, Yuvraj’s desire was fulfilled as not only did Gill make a century, but Kohli also reached the three-figure mark as Team India posted a massive 390 runs on the board and wiped Sri Lanka out for just 73, registering their greatest victory in the format.
