The Indian Premier League (IPL) got a nice boost with South Africa deciding to shorten their prep time for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia. Initially, they said all players had to be back home by May 26, but now they’ve shifted that to starting training on June 3. Enoch Nkwe, the Cricket South Africa Director of Cricket, mentioned that they’re focusing on getting ready for the WTC Final.
This change means players like Kagiso Rabada, Aiden Markram, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, and Tristan Stubbs can join in for the IPL 2025. The tournament is set to resume on May 17 after being paused for a week due to rising tensions between India and Pakistan.
South Africa was supposed to have a warm-up match against Zimbabwe on June 3 to get ready for the WTC Final, but this decision could lead to that match being canceled or changed. Originally, the BCCI planned to release all overseas players by May 26. But with the updated schedule, the league stage won’t wrap up before May 27, and the final is set for June 3.
Nkwe emphasized that they are sticking to the original timeline for WTC preparations and that May 26 is still the latest for players to return. Eight South African players have made the squad for the WTC Final, including Kagiso Rabada playing for Gujarat Titans, Lungi Ngidi from Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Aiden Markram with Lucknow Super Giants.
